Stands for Integrated Drive Electronics. A standard that defines the way a hard disk and its controller work together. Most PCs have an IDE controller and IDE-compatible hard disk drive inside the casing. PCs used as network servers or those used for power tasks, such as CAD, often use the more powerful SCSI standard. The two are not compatible.
